I was actually forced to purchase this SCSI card because I had purchased a XFX 790i Motherboard. I run SCSI Hard Drives, NOT SATA Hard Drives and my other SCSI Controller Card HAD to take up the center Graphic Card Slot so I was unable to run 3 way SLI, (3 Graphic Cards). I first used the cd Driver disk to make 32bit and 64bit drivers on floppies as required. I already had 3 seperate HOT SWAPPABLE SCSI hard drives with 3 different installed operating systems, XP-32, XP-64 and Vista-32. I removed my old SCSI card and installed the new SCSI 29320LPE PCIEx1 kit in the appropriate FIRST slot and restarted the computer to load the new driver. I loaded the floopy, per instructions and was actually able to get to the first graphic OS screen and then the blue screen of death arrived, rebooting the computer. No matter which floppy driver I used, the computer crashed. The floppy driver would NOT load! What was I doing wrong? After two hours of further frustraition, I went to bed. In the morning I decided to reinstall my old SCSI card and my computer started immediatly and showed both SCSI cards installed. The new SCSI card was found, but no driver was installed. It was just the card and no cable or hard drive was on it. I thought that since I already had a Windows OS installed, why not try to bypass the new floppy driver and try to install the new driver from the CD? Eureka, driver from the CD loaded and worked like a charm. I then loaded the CD driver to the other 2 Windows OS's and was rewarded with easy installation of the new driver. I then shut down the computer and removed my old SCSI card. I re-attached the SCSI cable to the new SCSI card and turned on the computer. EUREKA AGAIN, as the new SCSI card worked like it was supposed to. My old SCSI card that cost over $ 900.00, 2 channels and 40 SCSI drives when new 8 years ago, was replaced by a $ 250 single channel card that works perfectly. This new card also free's up a SLI graphic's card slot, so I now can run 3 way SLI. I LOVE THIS CARD ! | | Reviewed on 2007-10-01 New Product, Has Some Issues Great piece of equipment if you need to run an Ultrium tape backup system on a home system. No more server equipment required!
I have a Ultrium 960 drive running on my PCI Express MoBo (Abit IN9 32X MAX) home system. Drivers were fully compatible with MS Vista 64BIT, was detected immediately along with drive.
HOWEVER, this card currently has a LOT of issues with other Operating Systems. It's the first of it's kind (PCIe U320), and there are a lot of bugs to work out. Do NOT install this card on Windows XP or Windows Server 2003 systems (I haven't tested Server 2K yet). In all test runs (multiple mobo's and configs), the driver install hung indefinately while trying to install ADPU320.SYS. Upon rebooting, the operating system was corrupted and unable to launch (required Recovery CD and rebuild in some cases, System Restore worked on XP). (If the driver is detected on reinstall, it causes instant BSOD at the desktop.)
There is also no Tape Backup software compatible with Windows Vista x64 - so I am going to have to wait before I can use the tape backup. (I've tried every type of backup software: NovaBackup, BackupExec, GenieSoft, Backup My PC, Acronis, etc - none were Vista x64 compatible and would frequently crash.)
I have a helpdesk ticket in with Adaptec and waiting for resolution. I have heard on the forums though of most users experiencing the same issue. Hoping this gets fixed soon and I will update my review.
Update (Jan. 28/08):
Adaptec has released a work around fix to this issue (a null BIOS upgrade) that seems to be working. I have the card successfully operating on a Windows XP operating system, and I'm using GenieBackup. It works great. The application is a little unstable at times, but other than that, I have been backing-up/restoring tons of tapes.
If you have harddrive space issues (ie, video editor) I would highly recommend a Tape Backup system (400GB or 800GB uncompressed) as an alternative to harddrives. You can pickup 400GB tapes pretty cheap nowadays ($15-30), the tapes last for 30+ years, and are much more secure/stable than harddrives.
I would increase this product another 2 stars now. | |
