It works for me.
I wouldn't disagree with what other reviewers have said. The keys are clicky, but no big deal to me. The touch pad buttons are a bit low, but I'm managing. The auxiliary keys are quite small. All of that said, this is working well for me. I needed a very small keyboard to fit in a small space (with no room for a mouse) that I use in a home office area with my laptop. If you have space for a large keyboard AND mouse, I'm not sure why you'd want to use a small keyboard. It's okay, not great
Pros:
-The keyboard and touchpad worked immediately upon plugging it in. No driver downloads (at least with XP).
-The touchpad is actually fairly responsive, if a little small. It takes maybe three movements to get from the left side of the screen to the right side. Not many goofs along the way.
-The upper right corner works as a right-click, which is handy.
-The small size of the keyboard allows me to have both it and my mouse on the keyboard tray (I sometimes use my mouse with my left hand in conjunction with the keypad/keyboard.)
-I can use it on my lap
Cons:
-The 2 "mouse" buttons under the keypad are angled down on a slope, making them difficult to click. Pretty stupid design really.
-The touchpad is a little small, especially the scroll area. Sometimes the "up" movement doesn't get picked up.
-Most of all, the special keys (CTRL,ALT,TAB, DEL, etc.) are ridiculously small. I don't know how anyone who types correctly can use this keyboard. My laptop keyboard has normal sized keys for these, and it doesn't seem much bigger.
-The keyboard has a very "clicky" response, not at all like my laptop, so I often miss a stroke from tapping too lightly.
Bottom line: it's okay, not great. but what else is out there? It has helped with the pain in my hand/wrist from using the scroll wheel all day for work. It's taken about 3 weeks to get used to it. I'd probably spend $50 on it again, but I'd also look more closely at the full sized and/or wireless options. | | Reviewed on 2006-04-06
Good quality keyboard....but !!
I have only used this keyboard for a very short amount of time, but I know already I'm going to return it. As stated, I see no concerns about the quality of this product, but the keyboard is too problematical for my interests and purposes. Compared to a convention keyboard the layout of the typing keys seems much more cramped, some high-use keys are just smaller, and there is also the relocation of other keys to (re)learn. In essence, it would take a good while to get used to using this keyboard in my opinion.
I may have to sacrifice the alternative of also having a touchpad, which I like using on occasion, even just for a change, but there are a (very) few other compact keyboards available that are more similar to the conventional keyboard in the typing area layout and key sizing which I believe I would prefer even more.
I was pleased to learn that if you wish to also keep a conventional mouse connected, there seems to be no conflict with the touchpad. You can control the cursor with either device.
You may have more patience than I and find this to be a terrific keyboard, but pay close attention to the dimensions, key locations and sizes, and make your best judgement....good luck !! | | Reviewed on 2005-12-09
Good keyboard, so-so touchpad buttons
The keyboard itself is well-designed. I prefer a laptop keyboard because I have a small desk and I like all my buttons within quick and easy reach, so this was a natural choice for me. The modifier keys (Control, Alt, etc) are too small, but you can get used to them after awhile. I guess this was done to fit the "~" key next to them, but they could have left that key next to the "1" key like on most other keyboards and increased the modifier key size a bit.
Now for the dreaded touchpad:
The touchpad buttons are too low, slope down too much, and are not very comfortable to press a lot. If the keyboard was slightly wider and the buttons were made flat, it would have been better. The clicking is hard and uncomfortable. Superior touchpad buttons have a softer touch.
One major thing to watch out for with the touchpad buttons, is that the left one can become unresponsive after awhile. I took it apart (warranty's expired anyway) and found nothing amiss. My only guess is the piece of plastic that is supposed to press the sensor moves around too much. I end up having to press very hard to click, which in addition to the awkward placement, causes my pointer finger some pain. I am currently searching for a touchpad keyboard brand other than Adesso to replace this one.
I use this on a desktop Mac and you can't turn off the touchpad "tapping as clicking" feature. It can really mess up your work, especially when you're trying to get things done fast. I don't know who is to blame more; Adesso for not providing decent (or any) Mac drivers, or Apple for not supporting keyboards with two touchpad buttons (their touchpad Preference Panel will only install on Mac laptops when you install an OS). | |
