Customer ReviewsReviewed on 2008-07-21 Poor envelope feed The printer works as well as one might expect for a desktop printer; fairly fast; copies are crisp-looking and clean. My mediocre rating is for its poor envelope-handling ability.
Envelopes come out heavily creased. The support document tells several things you can do to fix this. One (a software change) doesn't help at all. The other (a hardware adjustment -- flipping two levers located along the paper's path) does help the creasing, but the manual says quite clearly that you must flip these levers back when you're done. This means, that to print an envelope, I must get up, go to the back of the printer (which is not that accessible), open up the back, flip two levers (not so easy to do) return to my computer and print the envelope, then get up and repeat the process to re-set the levers.
What is more, the envelopes are barely barely getting past this printing... they're getting a bit curved, sealed shut from the heat, so each envelope must be carefully nurtured back... carefully opened, carefully flattened... in order to have a professional look to them.
Clearly, this is not a printer for someone who intends to print envelopes. A previous model of Brother printer handled envelopes with no difficulty, so this is definitely a let-down by comparison.
| | Reviewed on 2008-05-03 It works well I have only had the printer a short period of time. I plugged it in and connected it, and it works very well. The print quality is fine. | | Reviewed on 2008-04-07 Solid low-cost monochrome laser printer This iteration of Brother's basic laser printer, like the HL-5040 and 5140 before it, function well for everyday business use where low to medium volume printing is the daily requirement.
One big advantage is that this machine comes with both USB and parallel ports, one of very few in this price range to have such versatility. | | Reviewed on 2008-03-31 Forget printing envelopes I have been a Brother printer user for years - and have had good experiences with all Brother products except my current printer, an HL-5240. In spite of following every Brother guideline and telephone instruction, and in spite of trying many different kinds of (#10) envelopes, this printer simply cannot print a #10 envelope without creasing it. For my purposes, this makes it just about useless. Brother has been no help; its customer service people merely state the obvious (about how to print envelopes) and suggest using different kinds of raw stock (which I have - even though this obviates using my own printed stationary). Nothing has solved the problem. If you don't need to print envelopes, this is a fine printer -- if you do need to print envelopes, look elsewhere. | | Reviewed on 2008-03-31 Wish I had My Brother Hl-5140 Back! This printer makes a clicking noise when you fist start it up. Brother customer service says this is normal! What ever you do, do not fill the paper try too high, the machine will jam. By to high I mean lower than the trays capacity. I am very disappointed with this model. The old HL-5140 was the best laser printer I ever had. This model is border line junk. Plus the new software does not support my Apple Airport Extreme, like the HL-5140 did. Customer support says there are some glitches with OS 10.5.2., so I can't go wireless, a real bummer! Good luck if you purchase this printer. Another disappointment.
Update-Do not try to run envelopes thru this printer! They are almost impossible to put in the feeder properly and end up creased when they come out. Worst printer I have ever owned! | |
