Reviewed on 2008-07-25 Above average printer, but missing tray for CD/DVD printing Ok, so this is a nice printer. My biggest beef is that it doesn't come with a tray to print CDs and DVDs which is why I purchased the printer in the first place. It was another $22.50 through a reseller on eBay. Someone mentioned that the earlier versions of the ip4500 had the tray included, but in recent shipments Canon had left this item out in USA bound printers. Something about licensing issues with Epson. Whatever the reason, it's a slight pain, but for the total price, well worth the effort.

Reviewed on 2008-07-21 It works okay..... I bought this to replace a workhorse Canon that I had. The old one had the same basic casing/tray, was cheap, and worked great. This printer is on the higher end in price, and functionally I'd rather have my old one. First of all, it has an added black ink for what I suspect is improved photo printing. This would be nice if the printer used that one (or allowed me to switch to it) when the main black cartridge became empty, but I'm also concerned that it will dry up since I don't do much photo printing. It is still completely full. The other colors get used enough printing web pages. This printer is also very slow to start up. Finally, I am not happy with how it opens up. This really is my main gripe. They upgraded an old model using pretty much the same number of parts and they made it worse. On my old model the front facing used to click open and click shut with a push. On the new model, to open it you have to lift the top up and pull the front facing out. Adding paper to the paper tray is now a pain in the rear, and keeping the front closed when I am not printing isn't worth the effort. Also, I can't leave stuff on top of the printer anymore. Then the paper tray itself is virtually identical to the old one except the plastic piece that covers over the exposed part no longer fits in as easily. The quality is the same, but. Also after 4 months, the part that moves the ink chamber up a little is wobbly and needs to be held in sometimes for the printer to print (easy fix with tape if it becomes a real problem).

Reviewed on 2008-07-20 Best Inkjet Printer Ever Made! I'm so done with HP printers, so I bought the Canon Pixma iP4500 Photo Inkjet Printer, and I would recommend this printer to everyone. Don't try to save a buck on a cheap inkjet printer, spend the cash on Canon Pixma iP4500, and you will also agree it was money well spent. Love this printer!!! Added bonus, it has a cool front load paper tray, and a rear paper feed. Plus the ink cartridges illuminate red when installed correctly. I could go on and on about this great printer, but I won't, just buy one and be happy that you finally have a printer that works great.

Reviewed on 2008-07-11 Terrific I got this printer for free after rebate from Apple (with the purchase of a macbook). It got me pretty excited when it arrived. It's good size and REAL sleek looking. Installing was very easy, as i followed exactly what the instructions said. I didnt use it a whole lot yet, but each time i used, i was astonished at its speed. Though it's an inkjet, it's got a laser printer speed. Even with color, it's very fast. afterall, it's a Canon, and im sure tho i havent tried a lot yet, the quality of photo printing and etc are excellent. my big recommendation.

Reviewed on 2008-07-06 Canon is still the best printer This is my second Canon printer and is a replacement for my 5 year old i960 which I absolutely loved. The print head started to go and I do a lot of fine detail printing so I had to replace it. I chose the ip4500 for a few reasons, One was because it also had separate color ink tanks (C,M,Y,K) plus the addition to pigment black which i'm not sure what difference that really makes. This printer also has dual trays, one on top and one underneath so you can have different types of paper loaded and can easily choose which tray in your printing setup right before you print or click a button on the printer. Another major feature that isn't mentioned, is that you can print on printable cd's and dvd's. You have to do some slight modifications like remove a small plastic tab and a little bit of configuration by hitting a combination of buttons on the printer to turn on this feature. You will need to purchase an "F" size disc tray for feeding the discs into the printer. You can get one on ebay for around 20 bucks. The printer does NOT come with a tray (the European versions do) as one of the other reviewers mentioned. I got mine from seller rungsamilathai, there are also step by step instructions as well as videos showing the procedure. The printer is very nice looking and folds up well. Its not a tall machine but it is a bit wide just about the same width the i960 was. It is a fingerprint magnet because of the hi-gloss black finish but cleans easy. Its sturdy and seems to be well made with thick plastic and don't really see anything cheap that can break easy. OK now for my big complaint. The ink cartridges have that chip on it which makes it very difficult to refill and or use non-OEM brands. Epson started this B.S. back in like 2000 and others have now followed. You can get the printer for a very low cost and to offset these cheap prices they jack up the prices on the ink and then put chips on them so you are forced to buy the manufacturers ink. I read an article in PC World about third party Inks and most of their tests showed no differences other than some brands did fade from UV light when they printed photos using photo paper. Regular plain papers had no issues. I've had fade outs with OEM brands so I now get my photos printed with Shutterfly or SnapFish because I believe they still use the old chemical process for prints and not inkjet. I have seen chip resetters out there but they cost half the price of the printer. To replace all 5 inks it will cost just under 50 bucks and almost the same for these chip resetters that allow you to refill the ink and trick the cartridge to think its brand new. I have also read that there is a way to bypass the chip via the printer programs utility, we'll see what happens when the time comes to replace the ink. Final thought on the printer that it is totally a great printer, looks good, printing both photos and general stuff look great and has the capability for disc printing. Its a great replacement for my i960 with many more features.
