The D-Link 8-port 10/100/1000 Desktop Switch (DGS-2208) provides an
excellent solution for expanding your Gigabit network. Gigabit
speed is 10 times quicker than 100Mbps Fast Ethernet connection,
enabling you to save time transferring bandwidth-intensive music,
video, photos, graphic, and data files. By sharing the Internet,
your users can check e-mail, browse the web, chat with friends and
family, and play online games using their own computer. To increase
the functionality of your network, you can also add other Ethernet-
enabled devices such as a print server, Network-Attached Storage
(NAS), and Internet camera.
This 8-port Gigabit Switch supports Quality of Service (QoS) that
improves the delivery of time-sensitive applications such as voice,
video, and gaming traffic. With this support, make and receive
jitter-free Voice over IP (VoIP) calls and experience lag-free LAN
gaming.
This 8-port Gigabit Switch's non-blocking architecture, with a total
of 16Gbps of switching capacity (2Gbps per port in full-duplex
mode), sends and forwards data at full wire-speed for maximum
throughput. Features like MAC address learning and aging, along
with 802.3x flow control alleviate traffic congestion, ensuring
reliable and efficient transmission of data. Supporting IEEE 802.3,
802.3u, 802.1p, and 802.3ab standards, this 8-port Gigabit Switch
is compatible with 10BASE-T, 100BASE-TX, and 1000BASE-T networks
and devices.
The DGS-2208 requires no configuration. It is compact in size,
making it ideal for desktops with limited space. It also includes a
wall mount kit, giving you the option of installing it on a wall or
underneath a desk. Supporting Auto-MDI/MDI-X, this 8-port Gigabit
Switch eliminates the need for crossover cables and uplink ports.
Easy-to-read LEDs display status and activity, and the cable
diagnostics feature checks the condition of your Ethernet cables to
see if any of them require replacement.

Reviewed on 2008-07-20 Does just what it claims! This switch does just what it claims. It does NOT drop the speed of all ports to the speed of the slowest connection. It is capable of multiple port speeds simultaniously. I doubt this switch will disappoint anyone looking for a plug and play gigibit switch!

Reviewed on 2008-07-04 It Works Out of The Box (But Only Provides 7 Usable Ports) The only reason I give this product 4 stars is because it should not be advertised as an 8 port switch when it only provides 7 usable ports (one port is used to hook up to your internet connection, i.e., router, etc.). It thereby provides 7 usable ports. It worked out of the box for me-used one 25 ft. RJ45 cat. 5E cable going from my router to my living room, connected it to this switch, and it gave me 7 instant internet ports for the WII, the LCD TV and the satellite receiver (EVERYTHING has some internet function these days). Instant access with no hitch. Very nice.

Nice think that I'm saving a bit of energy using the product. Nice attractive unit... not just a beige box. Same price as "non-green/George Bush type" switches.

Reviewed on 2008-06-26 It Just Works!! To think that one can have Gbit ethernet in the home/small office at such an affordable price is just amazing to me. This switch really gives you no other option for high speed network connectivity. I also own a linksys 8 port and a netgear 8 port and both of them have had the same issue, requiring me to power off/on to restore connectivity. That being said, it could be a bad NIC somewhere on my network. However, I now own three of these 8 port D-Link switches and I have not had to power them down once. There's really no reason to post pros/cons. This switch offers a complete management-free switched environment that performs up to expectations. I would definitely recommend buying this for any home and/or small office. Especially, if you transfer large files such as videos and/or music and image collections. Also great if you have a central backup repository for PC's/Macs.

Reviewed on 2008-06-10 Unreliable Bought mine from a local retailer -- seemed great at first, but spontaneously drops traffic every so often for no reasons what so ever. The ports literally die and I am forced to power cycle it various times in order to get it working again -- or alternatively keep repairing the connection in windows. I first thought it was a Vista problem, but it died for all my computers once. Maybe I got a lemon?
