Customer ReviewsReviewed on 2008-07-13 Horribly clumsy, but occasionally witty The Simpsons Game for the Nintendo Wii has a lot of very fundamental flaws. Poor camera control, bad viability in multi-player mode, not enough for to do in multi-player mode, and a lot of actions right from the beginning that are just within the physical abilities of the characters, meaning that if you're off by any amount you're not going to have to re-do a long, drawn-out series of stupid tasks just to get back to where you were, and then you'll probably screw it up again.
Granted, I've played games like that and really enjoyed them, but those were all games with really good plots. The Simpsons Game is too much game and not enough Simpsons. If you're a fan of the show, that means you like the simple, easy-to-absorb, random and goofy nature of the characters. You're not watching because you want high-brow, and if you bought the game you're probably not playing to have a series of nearly impossible and complex challenges. You probably just want to run around and be the Simpsons through a goofy, simple, non sequitur adventure.
The dialog running in the background is almost enough to make this worth the time. If you're listening, you'll probably laugh out loud more than once. Trouble is that they do have a tendency to steal lines they already used in the show, leaving you to wonder just how much the original creates had to do with this game anyway.
In short, too much of the wrong, not enough of the right. Good for a couple laughs packed into hours of frustration. | | Reviewed on 2008-05-14 Not for the Wii (if at all, that is...) This may work on a more traditional platform with more traditional controls, but after more than an hour of trying to time a SINGLE MOVE exactly right, I gave up - and I was only on the second stage. The Wii is known as a platform for more casual gamers who want a different level of physical interactivity, not hardcore gamers who want to spend hours figuring out the right timing and combination of joystick/button presses.
Aside from the fact that this is simply not the platform for this game, the game itself has the most annoying camera movement and controls I've ever seen. I'm also a huge Simpsons fan, but by the time I quit, I absolutely wanted to strangle my formerly beloved voiceover actors. Get stuck on a move like I was, and you'll be treated to an endless loop of the same spectacularly unfunny lines. Though I enjoy watching The Simpsons two or three times a day as it's aired, I don't know if I can watch the show for a day or two now - that's how obnoxious it becomes.
The Lego Star Wars games provide similar gameplay, but are far more intuitive, less irritating, and more overall fun.
Since this Simpsons fan of almost two decades found it a tedious and annoying experience, I'd say it's another unfortunate nail in the coffin of The Simpsons franchise, along with the steady decline in the writing of the series. What it really boils down to is that this game lacks any real fun for us old-school fans, who don't live chained to a game console.
If you like the show, watch it or the recent movie. If you like this kind of game, Lego Star Wars is far, far superior in every way.
Thank god I only rented this one, I almost bought it blind. | | Reviewed on 2008-05-12 Ouch my eyes If you are buying or playing this game you had better LOVE the Simpsons in general. The game play is rough at best with th ecamera shifting all around. The animated sceens look spectacular however once game play starts the visuals decline big time. It's the same run around and punch with Homer for 2 levels and that's when I just quit. I couldn't waste anymore time on a game that was this unappealing. We tried the 2 player split screen but that just enhanced the short-comings of the camera. I would not recommend. The lone bright spot was the funny one-liners that homer and family spits out randomly. | | Reviewed on 2008-04-27 Should have been so much better... I rented this game. I'm so glad I didn't buy it. The camera never seems to be where you want it to be. The "hidden packages" are supremely pointless. The super powers vary from underwhelming to annoying. (Marge's bullhorn is one of the most irritating things I've ever heard.) The cut scenes are entertaining.
I stopped playing in the middle of a level, because the game just isn't held together well. And I'm returning it with no intention of ever playing it agin or recommending it to anyone. Parts of it are okay, but it's just not worth it. | | Reviewed on 2008-03-31 I love this game! I think this game is a blast! The camera angle can drive me nuts at time but that wouldn't keep me from recommending this game! The only other bad thing I can say about it is the split screen for 2 players is side-by-side and that makes the screen too small for my tastes, lol. There was only 1 or 2 levels that 2 player almost was a must though. I did use a walkthrough guide a few times when I had no idea what to do...just google simpsons game walkthrough Wii and use the 1st choice in the results! I almost have it beat and then I will definitely play it again....and I am not much of a gamer, lol. There is some mild swearing in this game too! | |
