"Stuttering" vastly exaggerated
This review is for the PS3 version of Half Life2. (Amazon tends to lump all reviews together) I have not played the Xbox or PC versions, so this is a review, and NOT a comparison.
Having read numerous reviews complaining about the dropped frame and slow load times on the PS3 version of this game, I had all but convinced myself to buy the PC version instead. Then I found the PS3 version used for cheap and bought it anyway. And I'm very happy with it! I've had exactly 1 dropped frame so far and am over 3/5 the way through the game. (e.g. I had NO stuttering or dropped frames in the boat chase chapter despite what the 1UP.com reviewers claimed.) The graphics are nice, and I've had over 20 moving objects on screen at one time with no problems. (That's not counting the bullets!) So I think this issue has been overblown a bit. The online Team Fortress has also performed smoothly with zero stuttering.
As to the load times, yeah, they're a little slow. About 37 seconds, in point of fact (just timed one). I'm happy for you Xbox and PC owners if yours is significantly shorter, but frankly that's about the same or less loading time as other games I play on the PC and the PS3. (The Sims2 takes almost 3 minutes to load at times!)
Finally, you can quicksave at any time! Repeat, at ANY time!! Furthermore, you can still move around and fight while quicksaving! This feature has proved invaluable time and time again.

No Excuse to miss out on this
Seeing as the price has come down quite a bit since release there is really no reason to miss out on this experience.
If you like first person shooters the Half-Life Series is top notch.
If you like multiplayer Team Fortress 2 is a lot of fun.
And everyone needs to experience Portal.
You get a lot of entertainment in this package. The only reason not to get this would be if you don't like first person perspective games. | | Reviewed on 2008-07-17
Best Bargain for Gaming!
First, I've owned Half Life 2 and HL: Episode 1 on PC and this version looks as good on a flat screen with HDMI, if not better. Second, I've noticed no appreciable slowdown, lags, or freezes. Sony has an online patch for the game that you can download the first time you run it- I've used it and the games run great.
I mean.. 5 games. Half Life 2 is a must have if you enjoy sci-fi and like first person shooters.. it's got one of the most uniquely fresh game worlds you'll ever play in. Aside from Half-Life and Ep. 1&2, you also get the platform puzzle shooter Portal- a wonderful mess-with-your-head game with cool humor. And Team Fortress is a solid online capture-the-flag shooter with characters reminiscent of 'the Incredibles'. (no, I haven't noticed any lags in the Sony server, either)

Great Value!
Not only do you get the entire line of Half-Life 2 games (massive first person role playing/shooter game) but you also receive Team Fortress (entertaining online shooter) and Portal (great puzzle game) as well for less than $30.00 making it a must buy for anyone owning a PS3 console. In full 1080p view the games are just breath taking, in a matter of minutes you will find yourself becoming immersed into the games' massive environments (such as that of Half-Life 2's that are a combination of something along Orson Welles' 1984 and Interplay's Fallout) that have you coming back for more. The replay value is like that of reading a good book, you'll play it again just to experience it one more time.
