was not easy to install
Very very disappointed. Lacie does not come with a manual, usually not a problem, except the manual provided in the software is in Adobe. What a PITA to access. When you plug the unit in you have to search through several files looking for the manual. I never found it save for the first page. I am sending the unit back after spending 45 minutes to an hour just looking for the how to use info.

Stop! Don't buy this - mine stopped working after five weeks of use!
I ordered this hard drive from Amazon on April 8, 2008, and it arrived three days later. At the time of this writing - May 18, 2008 - the device has stopped working. I'll not go into the specifics, except to say that I have confirmed that it is the device which has stopped working, and not a computer problem or other cause. I have never dropped, damaged, or otherwise abused the device; it has simply failed. By way of contrast, the Western Digital hard drive I use for backup has survived for nearly three years, two external cases, and three computers, and works as well as it did the day I bought it. It has obviously been re-promoted to my primary external drive.
I'm a graduate student, and I was using this device to store some of my research and work. To put it mildly, I am distraught over this development, as I must now scramble to change deadlines in preparation of having to re-do some of my work. I have submitted a trouble report to LaCie, and pending their resolution of the issue, I will edit this review accordingly. However, I cannot recommend that anyone purchase the device after the experience I've just had. Shop with extreme caution.
1ST UPDATE: I received a hard drive back from LaCie's repair center today. I write "a" hard drive, and not "the" hard drive, because the one they sent me is not the same model as the one I originally purchased. This, in itself, is not a big deal; it's a cosmetic difference. However, the "new" hard drive doesn't work, either! It's doing the exact same thing the "old" one did!
I have already submitted a formal request to LaCie for a full refund, plus my shipping expenses. I will update this review again, pending the outcome of that exchange. However, I cannot recommend their products. Perhaps they don't fail very often - I can only speak for my experiences there -, but since the product sent back to me, supposedly having been repaired/replaced, doesn't work either, I must conclude that their customer service/repair ethos is questionable at best. Do not buy this product.

Beautiful, yet Powerful
After trying 4 LaCie Porsche Design external harddrives, I decided to try adding this Little Disk drive for my laptop. What an incredible looking, elegent piece of hardware. I've gotten many compliments on it, but what is amazing is how well it does the job. I store extra music, videos, extra files,etc for travel. One of the best looking portable hard drives out there.

It's a nice drive, fast and also good looking .
The extendible USB cable is a nice thought ..

Why is the case made of plastic?
Other than for some reason they made the case out of plastic it's fine. But why would you do that especially since the old porsche were not. STOP BEING CHEAP LaCie | |
