| Product DescriptionFor much of its running time, High Tension earns its title as a gory and suspenseful tale of hot pursuit. Originally titled Switchblade Romance in England, and trimmed of its most excessive gore to avoid an NC-17 rating during its brief U.S. theatrical release, this French horror film provokes a memorable case of high anxiety from its alluring female lead (Cecile de France), but it's an otherwise brainless exercise with a ludicrous conclusion that renders the entire film null and void. It's essentially a Texas Chainsaw wanna-be, which isn't such a bad thing if you're a horror buff with an appetite for gruesome death at the hands of a brutal and nameless serial killer. Dressed in greasy coveralls and a baseball cap, and driving a rusty old delivery van, the killer indiscriminately destroys an entire family before chasing after the tomboyish Marie (de France), who is trapped in a nonsensical screenplay that won't let her go. With a high body count and buckets of bloodshed, High Tension has moments of delirious intensity, which is probably why Lion's Gate (bolstered by the success of Saw and other horror hits) deemed the film worthy of U.S. release with some (but not all) of its French dialogue badly dubbed in English. It's horror for die-hards only, and on those terms it's worth a look. --Jeff Shannon - Actors: Jean-Claude de Goros, Maïwenn Le Besco, Philippe Nahon, Cécile De France, Franck Khalfoun

Customer ReviewsReviewed on 2008-07-12 Why? **CONTAINS SOME SPOILERS TOWARDS THE END** What did we do to deserve this?? Is this retaliation for the whole Freedom Fries thing?? Seriously though. This film is awful. The ending surprise is given away in the first 10 minutes. The gore is over the top and poorly done. The film slips from English dubbed to French in the middle for about 20 minutes. Did you forget to voice over that part? Were you too busy trying to understand the movie yourself? Don't get me wrong, I understand the movie. It's a pretty shallow concept, that could've made for a good yarn if the idiots in charge of this thing would've put a little time and consideration into the continuity of the film. The whole premice of the movie is a giant plot hole.
**SPOILERS AHEAD** I can handle poor effects and low budget if there's continuity, but this is just dumb. I've tried to make sense of it, even going out on limbs but it just doesn't work! Split personalities don't drive two vehicles simultaniously! BAH! STUPID! | | Reviewed on 2008-07-02 AWESOME FLICK! This movie is like no other- I highly recommend it if you like moies that make you think! | | Reviewed on 2008-06-05 WTH was this?? I'm not even going to bother giving a synposis of the movie *or* even give my thoughts about the first hour and a half of the movie (which is pretty much the entire movie!). This will be one of the shortest reviews I've given, heh, but I don't need to say much.
Because even if I do tell you what I thought of most of the movie, it's not going to help you any because once you watch the ending, the last 10 minutes or so, you'll think the same thing as me: "WTH was this?!. All that you watched will be pointless and you'll just ask yourself, "Why did I waste an hour and half watching this?". So I won't waste my time (or yours) writing about what I thought of the first hour and a half because the ending pretty much throws the *whole* movie story out the window in less than 10 minutes! What I will say is don't even bother watching this, it's a horrible movie!!
High Tension did not make sense at all, oh when you're watching it yah it does, but once the ending comes around, it doesn't do anything but leave you questions and disgusted by what you just saw. Just like I did. The movie was okay, up until the ending and then it was just a "WTH" feeling!!
Don't even bother with this movie, the "twist" in the ending was stupid and I didn't think it was a good one either! If you're still curious, by all means watch, but don't say I didn't warn you!! LOL. | | Reviewed on 2008-06-01 Good Horror Movie I can't imagine this is a French movie. Not only it is very bloody and violent, it matches the classic Italian horror movie by Argento Lucio Fulci. Moreover, the twist at the end also makes this not a so-so slasher movie. | | Reviewed on 2008-05-10 The best French horror film I've seen yet Without doubt, HIGH TENSION is the best French horror film in ages. A lot of people criticise the 'twist ending', why? The film makes sense on every level, think about it! Aja has directed a great film and was released uncut at the cinemas over in the UK. Which suprised me with the moronic film censors. Sit back and watch a violent and gory rollercoaster of thrills and twists! | |
