Customer ReviewsReviewed on 2008-01-02 Scholastic Video collection, Jumbo Box of Storybook Classics I am a retired NYC Preschool teacher who is passionate about children's literature. What Scholastic has done is to present the original work of the authors and illustrators and improved the listening and viewing experience for the child and adult, by adding a professionally done reading and carefully selected music. I found some of these stories to be so enhanced from the paper print books that I newly appreciate them. I selected this item to send as baby gifts for two new additions to our family and hope that they and their parents enjoy them as much as my grandsons and the rest of our family do.
Joan Ellen Introzzi | | Reviewed on 2007-09-14 Dissenting opinion I am surprised that this collection is rated so highly. (It was given to us as a gift so this is the first time I've looked at the Amazon page.)
Harold and the Purple Crayon, etc is a very charming video. It's really wonderful to watch the pictures appear as the stories are told. I highly recommend this video, but I recommend you buy it separately. Most of the other videos in this collection are okay at best and some are, well, just bad. Even Where the Wild Things Are, which is a very good book, is done poorly here. It is set to music that sounds something like recorded church bells when the tape has been played one too many times. And the images move around on the screen in a way that almost makes me dizzy.
My suggestion would be to buy Harold separately and the Where the Wild Things Are book and skip this set.
| | Reviewed on 2007-05-29 Classic Storybooks As a preschool teacher, I love that Scholastic has chosen to animate some of my favorite stories. This collection has some of the best stories by some of the top children's authors. They contain the same stories that my students ask to read again and again, plus some new additions they love. The movies are all of the highest quality. Favorite characters come alive with voices, movement and music, while staying true to the original picture books. On a rainy day, I can show my class one of these videos without feeling guilty. And, I know my own young children are using their TV time watching educational/quality content. | | Reviewed on 2007-03-01 Our kids' favorite This collection is fabulous, and has provided hours of entertainment for our 3 kids. They go through spells of being addicted to one or the other of the shows. Just about every one of the different stories has been a favorite at one point or another! There are 3-4 extra stories on every DVD as well, and these are at least as good as the main stories. The collection is great find--fun music as well. | | Reviewed on 2006-12-12 Great TV for toddlers / preschoolers I got this as an alternative to TV programs for my 2 1/2 year old son. It's such a nice collection. Each DVD runs about an hour and has tons of stories. He loves it and this is a really good deal too for 6 DVD's. They are all from books and ranging from really funky 60's-70's animation to ones that are from stories just a few years old. It's great! | |
