Reviewed on 2008-06-02 Great for the price - does the job I purchased this unit to test potentially dangerous noise sources and it performs very well. The criticism that the Max/Min switch makes sufficient noise when depressing that it locks the Max to the sound of the switch is correct. So if you need a Max reading in a quiet environment, this unit is not for you. Otherwise, it works great and I highly recommend... |

Reviewed on 2008-05-07 Cheap, adequate, some flaws First of all, this thing is cheap. Don't know what people expect when it costs so little. Secondly, it measures with a C-weighting. What does that mean? Look it up. I had no problems getting readings as low as 40 dB in a quiet room. One gripe I do have is when trying to get a MAX reading of less than 70dB. Pressing the MAX button causes a click that is heard quite loudly by the microphone and say you are in a room where the ambient noise level is 50dB, pressing the max button automatically reads around 70dB. |

Reviewed on 2008-01-10 Great so far! I'm not sure what product some of the other reviewers ended up with, but the SPL1000 I just got says on the front of the package "30 to 130 dB"... I just measured my bedroom and got a reading of about 32 dB, so this product does in fact read well below 60 dB.
I primarily purchased this as a toy, and to see what I was pumping out of my stereos and the loudness of my motorcycle exhaust, and it does the job 100%. I love this little thing |

Reviewed on 2007-09-01 Not for use on non-loud noises. I had hoped to be able to gauge the decibel level in less than raucous situations. But, as Elizabeth points out, this device is useless below 60 decibels: shouting level. It has never given me a reading below 60 in any situation, including a quiet bedroom. If you want to see how quickly your car speakers will deafen you, this device may be useful. For non-loud situations, look for something else. |

Reviewed on 2007-08-19 Poor product The problem with this product is that it turns itself off after about 10 minutes. That makes it very difficult to get any meaningful data from it . . like leaving it in a room for an hour or so to determine the highest noise level. There is no way to control the shut-off feature. |
