| The DRX-S70U External Slim DVD Multi Drive for Windows from Sony is an external DVD burner that supports 8.5 GB dual layer DVD burning as well as standard 4.7 GB DVD and DVD-RAM media. The drive features a high-speed USB 2.0 interface, allowing you to connect it to almost any computer. The drive allows you to burn DVD+/-R discs at 8x speed, allowing you to write a full DVD in approximately 10 minutes. You can write 8.5 GB dual layer DVD+/-R DL discs at 4x speed, and DVD-RAM discs at 5x speed. The drive will also write standard CD-R/RW discs at up to 24x speed. The drive includes the Nero 7 Software Suite for Windows, allowing you to get started burning discs right out of the box. Sony Portable CD/DVD
The Sony DRXS70U is an excellent portable CD/DVD drive. It is slim and compact and, more importantly, speeds up copying discs considerably. Copying from one drive to a second is much faster than copying from a disc to the hard drive then back to a new disc. It is also a must-have accessory for mini-notebooks, e.g. ASUA Eee PC900, which don't have built-in optical drives. I recommend it. |  | Reviewed on 2008-06-03

It worked "out of the box". I bought it for a Fujitsu Lifebook mini that had no CD drive. Plugged the drive into the USB port, XP's hardware wizard id'd it, and that was enough. Didn't bother with the fancy software. | | Reviewed on 2008-04-27
Great Altermative to Macbook Air Superdrive
This unit is only slightly larger than the Air's optional Superdrive and has all of same functionality but with one additional feature that can either be considered a plus or a minus: It is powered by an external power supply. Because of this feature, it can be plugged into a USB hub - unlike the Air's Superdrive which requires the modified USB port on the Air to run, and therefore monopolizes the only USB port present. Using the Sony, I can have my DVD drive, iPhone, a portable hard drive, and a media card reader plugged in simultaneously, which is quite important to me. As a bonus, the Sony's silver face and black case also blend with the Apple's design reasonably well, meaning that your desk will still look stylish! | | Reviewed on 2008-03-08

This is a great product for a good price. It's small enough to fit in a laptop bag and carry around without even noticing. It is barely bigger than a CD, and less than half inch thick. The guys over at J&R

Fast, Slim, Most Important...It's Portable!
I've been searching for a slim external drive and being portable. There are tons out there being external, a few claims to be slim. This Sony takes the cake! It is extremely light comprared to other external drive. Speed of burning isn't too bad. The only complain is it would be nice to be able to use USB power supply rather than having to carry the power block around as well. | |
