Customer ReviewsReviewed on 2008-05-19 Price is right. Two gems in the mix. I have most of these movies because I have the 50-musical set Musicals Classics 50 Movie Pack Collection which is also extremely affordable. This set had one movie, however, that I really wanted: an old Vera-Ellen movie called "Happy Go Lovely." The dancing is great and the plot is quite clever. Plus it stars David Niven as the love interest and Caesar Romero in a somewhat comic role as the producer.
In addition there was a suprisingly good movie (though not really a musical) with Betty Hutton and Barry Fitzgerald, called "The Stork Club." I'd not heard of it. Fitzgerald is a gem of an actor.
Apart from those two movies, I'd get the 50-movie pack and skip this. The two I mentioned, though, are well worth the price of admission. | | Reviewed on 2008-03-26 Decent compilation A couple really good movies and a lot of 'B' movies. Not a bad collection, but not top-of-the-line either. | | Reviewed on 2007-01-26 Mixed Bag of Hollywood Musicals This 3 DVD set provides seven hard to find films in easy to use format. The other three, Happy Go Lovely, Royal Wedding, Second Chorus are widely available and it's a shame that more of the harder to find titles weren't substituted for these three. The first film on the first disk, Three Broadway Girls, is a rollicking pre-code comedy that's great fun to watch (Joan Blondell at her wise-cracking best), but it's a stretch to classify this as a musical. With over 14 hours of film viewing on the 3 disks this compilation has to be one of the best bargains for the aficionado of the Hollywood musical. These are not the golden era MGM classics, but these films exude a charm and fun sometimes lacking in the "big productions" and help round out the history of the American musical film. These films are for viewers who are not afraid of black and white (several are in color, most not) and enjoy traditional singing and dancing with often light plots. I would love to see more of these hard to find old musicals released in bargain packaging like this. | |
