Another general guideline for horsepower size is the number of people in the family and the distance the water must be lifted; 1/3 for 1 or 2 people (small) lift required 0'-10', 1/2 HP for 2 to 4 people (medium) 10'-20', 1HP over 4 people (large) 15'-25'.
