| Product Description You may think the world doesn't need another adaptation of Jane Eyre--but you're wrong. This new and wonderfully lush Masterpiece Theatre version, directed by Susanna White (who directed the equally sumptuous miniseries of Bleak House starring Gillian Anderson), contrasts Jane Eyre's vivid inner life with the harshness of her outer life; both Georgie Henley (The Chronicles of Narnia) as the young Jane and newcomer Ruth Wilson express the inner vitality of the outcast orphan girl whose spirit captures the heart of the rough, charismatic landowner Mr. Rochester (Toby Stephens, Die Another Day). Stephens, it must be said, is far too conventionally handsome for the part, but he makes up for it by capturing Rochester's abrasive and mercurial temperament. (Wilson's looks are perfect; at one moment she seems awkward and homely, at another utterly luminous.) Jane Eyre is so often remade because the story is so potent; this production brings all of the novel's juice and passion to the fore, emphasizing the characters' sensual experience while staying true to the restrictions and mores of the period. All in all, exceptional. --Bret Fetzer - Actors: Ruth Wilson (II), Toby Stephens, Amy Steel (II), Jacqueline Pilton, Anne Reid

Customer ReviewsReviewed on 2008-07-20 The best Jane Erye version to date what a beautiful tale cast with exceptional actors! i've seen many versions and this is my favorite hands down!! | | Reviewed on 2008-07-13 The Best Version Yet I love this film. It is the best video of Jane Eyre yet. They stuck so truly to the novel, I don't think anyone could ask for a better. It is wonderful! Totally worth the money!! | | Reviewed on 2008-07-09 Bravo! Truly a great movie that you can enjoy over and over again. Acting is beautiful, scenery is just what it sounds like in the book. The only thing I would have like to see is the ending with a little more aniticipation. The sequence of finally finding Mr. Rochester and bringing him a glass of water should have been done with as much tension and anticipation as the rest of the movie. I think had it been 1-2 more segments long like Pride and Prejudice, it would have made all the difference. However, overall I adored this movie. | | Reviewed on 2008-07-07 Amazing I watched this when it aired on PBS and I thought it was amazing. I had never read the book and never really wanted to. This show did a wonderful job in geting the audience to want to read the book. While I recently read the book (which was amazing) I found it, in comparison to the movie, quite different with a different feeling to it. No matter, it captured the essence of Jane Eyre's character and her story and did it in a wonderfully artistic manner. I would recommend this to anyone who loves to read the Bronte sisters or Austen. | | Reviewed on 2008-07-06 Only verson I've seen but now have to see the Dalton version as well So, my one and only New Year resolution this year was to read more and I have succeeded. So, how does this movie fit into that? Well, I am interested in reading classics. I've always loved period piece movies; Howards End, Sense and Sensibility, Bleak House, to name a few. So, not really knowing what this movies was about (just a general idea) I got it, popped it in and was sucked in. WOW! I watched this movie with my mom who got just as sucked in as I did. My husband who does NOT watch movies with accents or lacking some sort of shoot out, actually ended up watching it with us as well. LOL.
Having no other version to compare it to, I just have to say that this was done so well. Is this castle available for rent? For me, Jane being thrilled with having family over money truly sums it up. She KNOWS what is important and finally finding it, won't let it go.
Enjoy this! | |
