| Product DescriptionOne record producer, the creators of Hedwig and the Angry Inch and top indie rock artists come together to create a tribute album benefiting the Hetrick-Martin Institute, home of the Harvey Milk High School-the first accredited high school in the country for LGBTQ youth.
Follow My Voice: With the Music of Hedwig weaves the compelling, courageous stories of four students at this controversial school with a unique chronicle of the yearlong creation of Wig in a Box, the album whose songs poignantly echo these teens struggles and aspirations. Audiences around the world became instant Hed Heads as Hedwig, like everyone who was ever young, questions TheOrigin of Love, dreams of a Sugar Daddy, feels like a Freak and curses a Wicked Little Town.
Meanwhile, the little known Harvey Milk School for at-risk youth, operating for 20 years in New York City s East Village quickly became the subject of international news when it received accreditation and financial support from NYC. A furious controversy over public funding ignite passionate self-determination from the kids and a deeper commitment from the artists who them-selves know what it s like to be outside the mainstream.
Through a dramatic and vibrant combination of verité documentation, student video diaries, and rare in-studio scenes of artists recording tracks, Follow My Voice offers a powerful look at this unlikely intersection of youth, gender and rock. Customer ReviewsReviewed on 2008-04-24 Six Inches Back I love Hedwig and the Angry Inch, I own the movie and soundtrack. The song Wicked little Town makes me cry. With that being said, this DVD is more a documentary about teenagers who attend an alternative high school. Proceeds from the sale of 'Wig in a Box' a tribute album of Hedwig will be donated to the school. It tells the story of how these kids face discrimination from their peers and family. Their stories are mixed in with artists renditions of songs from Hedwig. Some of which are not very good. Seeing the artists do take after take and mess up began to get tiresome after a while. Also I thought the kids liked Hedwig and were fans of it and would sing some of the songs. They didn't and don't. And Finally, I was expecting to see Cyndi Lauper but she's nowhere on this DVD | | Reviewed on 2007-10-09 Great Music--Inspiring Documentary I watched this movie for the great music performers--Ben Folds, Polyphonic Spree, Rufus Wainwright, etc--and it turned out to be so much more than I expected. The stories of the LGBT youth were so eye-opening and inspriring. Highly recommended! | | Reviewed on 2007-08-27 A great insight into young gay life What a spectacular documentary. I thouroughly enjoyed every minute of this film. It really gives great insight into the struggles of young people who are considered different by supposed "normal" society. I really felt for these people. And as a bonus, it has great music from Hedwig and the Angry Itch compiled by the filmmakers. | | Reviewed on 2007-08-14 Singing Along "Follow My Voice: With the Music of Hedwig"

"Hedwig and the Angry Inch" is a great movie, a great stage play and great fun. It has been noted as a milestone in the world of gay cinema and has given us some great songs. A record producer, the creators of the film and some very popular independent rockers have come together to make a tribute album for the Hetrick-Martin Institute which runs the Harvey Milk School in New York City, a haven for GLBT youth. The school provides for at risk youth (primarily gay, lesbian and transgender students who have been forced to leave their home schools by undue violence. This documentary follows the stories of four teens who present their struggles and hopes via the music from the cult musical.
Watching the movie and listening to the glorious music will force viewers to reconsider their preconceptions about sexuality and gender.
"Hedwig" was earth shaking when it was first produced and has come to be an affirming experience for many of us. For those of you who have not seen it, it is the story of a transsexual rock star looking for love. The musical score is dynamic and one of the best written for a musical and for many the music has become part of their lives. The tribute album quickly sold and now we have the DVD of the making of that album. It is a movie of people who understand what made the original play so good and the songs are powerfully interpreted by those that sing them.
The dimension of adding the lives of four kids who are each a Hedwig in a way and showing them trying to get on with their lives is wonderful. These kids have managed to find their place in the world and have accepted themselves and this is so moving to watch.
I cannot recommend this film enough. You will not only be entertained but you will learn about the beauty of our youth and realize that these are our future.
