Ghost of Tsushima movie announced by Sony

Fans of the smash-hit PlayStation game Ghost of Tsushima are in for a nice surprise. Earlier this week, Sucker Punch Productions (the developer that made Ghost of Tsushima) Game Director Nate Fox announced via the PlayStation Blog that a movie based on their 2020 action-adventure game is in the works.

For anyone not too familiar with the game, Ghost of Tsushima follows the story of protagonist Jin Sakai, head of the Sakai clan and samurai warrior as he tries to repel the real-life 1274 Mongol invasion of the Japanese island of Tsushima. Without spoiling too much of the plot, the game mainly revolves around Sakai recruiting friends and companions across the island to help him rid his homeland of their invaders.

The game itself was one of the biggest releases of 2020 and received widespread acclaim. Praised for its breathtaking audio and visuals, well-designed combat, memorable characters, strong performances from the game’s motion capture actors and a captivating historical narrative. The PlayStation-exclusive title was nominated for a myriad of awards including Game of the Year at The Game Awards in 2020 and won the award for Best Art Direction at the same event.

Not much is known about the upcoming movie including an unknown release date but it’s safe to say we should learn much more about the project as it develops. It’s also unknown whether or not any of the game’s original voice actors, such as Daisuke Tsuji who voices Jin Sakai, will be involved in the project.

According to Fox, the game sold over 6.5 million copies so the market is definitely there for a film based on the game. The game even features a “Kurosawa Mode” that allows for the game to be played behind black and white, film-grained sort of filter with Japanese audio to emulate the influential Samurai films of legendary Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa who has been credited by Sucker Punch Productions as one of the game’s biggest influences.
