Since the release of the PlayStation 5, the DualSense controller has received plenty of praise as an excellent controller by itself and a worthy successor to the DualShock 4. It has now been over a year since the DualSense controller was revealed to the world and now, Sony wants to shake things up with two new colorways for their next-gen controller.
The base design for the DualSense controller features a sleek white and black two-toned design that perfectly matches the aesthetic of the PlayStation 5 console. For the first release of new colors for the controller, Sony has taken inspiration from the night sky and the galaxy with the new Midnight Black and Cosmic Red DualSense controllers.
The new controllers were unveiled via a PlayStation Blog post written by Isabelle Tomatis, senior director of PlayStation VR, esports and peripherals marketing and licensing at Sony Interactive Entertainment. The Midnight Black and Cosmic Red controllers are available now for preorder at antonline and are scheduled to launch on June 18.

The original DualSense controller emits a blue hue. According to Satoshi Aoyagi, a member of the PlayStation design team, both of the Cosmic Red and Midnight Black controllers will also have this distinguishing feature and show off a subtle blue that produces unique shades of red and black. Aoyagi also stated that the controllers’ buttons and detailing will also fit the aesthetic of the new controllers.
Unlike the original DualSense and Cosmic Red controllers, the new Midnight Black controller is opting for a single-tone design. According to Leo Cardoso, another member of the PlayStation design team, the designs of the new controllers are a natural progression for PlayStation.
“Our goal is to always find designs that will surprise and entice our fans, and these new colors are the result of an extensive selection process,” Cardoso said. “We wanted the new controller colors to complement each other, as well as the original DualSense wireless controller and PS5 console, so we designed the colors around the theme of ‘galaxy’ as it felt like a natural progression from the original PS5 and accessories designs.”
