Fantastic PlayStation Titles You Need to Play

As usual, Sony hit an absolute homerun with the PlayStation 4. The PS4 is one of the most successful consoles of all time and there’s good reason for that. The console built on what made its three previous iterations successful and combined all of it to create a terrific gaming machine. And not only is the PS4 impressive in terms of power and performance but part of what has made the Sony console so successful is its endless lineup of titles.

Since its release in late 2013, the PS4 has hosted some truly remarkable games. But now, the “next gen” is in full swing and the PlayStation 5 is the primary Sony console. However, it is still relatively difficult to get your hands on the PS5 and the PS4 is still a great console. It’s easy to get a bit overwhelmed with so many exciting games coming out throughout the year.

But, before you move to the next generation of consoles, here are a few PS4 titles that are well worth a playthrough if you haven’t dived into them already. And if you have in fact moved onto the PS5, all three of these titles are playable on the new console and many received dedicated PS5 patch upgrades as they were optimized for next gen gaming.

Ghost of Tsushima

Released at the end of the PS4’s life span, Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima makes sure to take the PlayStation to its absolute limits. If you haven’t already played this game, you most certainly have heard about it and the vast amount of praise the game has received over the last six months is absolutely warranted.

Ghost of Tsushima transports the player to 13th-century Japan where they will play as Jin Sakai, a samurai and head of the Sakai clan, as he tries to stop the real-life invasion of the island of Tsushima by the Mongol Empire.

An action-adventure game with some stealth mechanics thrown in, Ghost of Tsushima does a great job of making you feel like a noble and powerful samurai warrior with great combat and gameplay mechanics. However, while the combat is good, this 2020 title separates itself from the competition with a combination of two things: captivating story elements and spectacular visuals.

I don’t want to spoil anything about the story but I can say that, towards the end of the game, Ghost of Tsushima had me actually caring about its characters. And while not every quest in the game is created equal, the main quests and “mythic tales” are some of my favorites.

Lastly, one of the things you’ll quickly notice about Ghost of Tsushima is just how gorgeous this game will look. Even on the base PS4, there will several moments throughout the game where I just sat and admired the game world and the beauty that Sucker Punch created. The game even has a black and white “Kurosawa mode” which is a tribute to legendary Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa but whether you’re playing in that mode with English subtitles or you’re playing in color with English voice acting, you’re in for a truly great audio-visual experience.

There’s a reason why this game won Best Art Direction at The Game Awards 2020 and has been nominated for several “Game of the Year” awards. If you’re looking for a captivating, beautiful and exciting PS4 experience—this game is for you. And if you’re playing on the PS5, you can expect awesome samurai action at a smooth 60 FPS.

From March 31 until April 14, you can find Ghost of Tsushima on antonline on sale for only $39.99.

The Last of Us Part II

While Ghost of Tsushima was nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2020, it was The Last of Us Part II who actually came away with the crown. A sequel to 2013’s The Last of Us, the seven-year gap between the first game and Part II created an incredible amount of hype for Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic action-adventure game. And, for the most part, The Last of Us Part II lived up to that hype.

While it’s not exactly necessary, I would highly recommend you play the first game in the series before diving into this one but if you’re new to the series and want to play the most recent game or you’re already a fan and somehow haven’t gotten around to playing Part II yet, here’s what you can expect from this title.

I don’t want to spoil things for anyone who hasn’t played the first game but in Part II you’ll be playing as Ellie, four years after the events of the first game. Players will be tasked with exploring a beautiful, chaotic version of the Midwest and West Coast of the United States. This is a character-driven story and playing the first game is obviously incredibly important for establishing relationships and developing characters.

Part II takes gameplay elements from the first game and improves upon them and with the two games being released seven years apart, the graphical improvement of the second game is noticeable. Add in incredible voice acting performances from Troy Baker, Ashley Johnson and Laura Bailey and you’re left with the kind of emotionally gripping, layered and exciting project that developer Naughty Dog has become known for over the years.

Unlike our previous entry, The Last of Us Part II has yet to receive a PS5 upgrade. Still, it offers one of the best overall gaming experiences on the market.

From March 31 until April 14, you can find The Last of Us Part II on antonline on sale for only $29.99.

God of War

If you haven’t noticed the pattern yet, it’s that there were some truly great action-adventure games released for the PS4. God of War is one of the best. Not to be confused with the original God of War (2005) for the PS2, this 2018 game is actually the eighth game of the God of War series. And while playing the previous games is beneficial in explaining the actions and personality of the series’ protagonist Kratos, God of War works pretty well as a stand alone title despite being a sequel to 2010’s God of War III.

Unlike the previous titles in the series which focus on Greek mythology, this PS4 title sees Kratos enveloped in Norse mythology. If you want a game that truly makes you feel like a powerful god that you are playing as, God of War is perfect.

Satisfying combat, a great story with plenty of twists and turns and imaginative game worlds all combine to make this game one of the best games that has ever been released on the PS4. With an untitled sequel to this game scheduled to be released at some point in 2021 for the PS5, now is a perfect time to experience the addicting hack and slash gameplay of God of War. Speaking of the PS5, back in February, God of War received a big upgrade for the next gen console that allows the game to played at 60 FPS with impressive 4K resolution.

You can find God of War on antonline for only $19.99—a great deal for a game that is widely considered one of the best games of the last decade and a staple of the action-adventure genre.
