New PlayStation VR and Controller

New PlayStation VR and Controller

Virtual reality is seen by many as the future of gaming. Whether you believe that or not, you can’t deny that VR presents endless exciting possibilities and it will have at least some impact on the gaming industry for the foreseeable future. Well, Sony is doing what they can to stake their place in the future with the recent announcement of the next generation of VR on the PlayStation and all that goes with it.

The original PlayStation VR was released back in October of 2016 (with a launch price of $399) and is compatible with the PS4 and the PS5 (via an adaptor.) As of December of 2019, Sony had sold over 5 million units of PS VR and so the public demand for virtual reality gaming is definitely there.

Well, the next generation of PlayStation VR—tentatively called “PS VR 2” by fans (although not yet by Sony in any official capacity) is expected to take virtual reality gaming on the PlayStation console to the next level.

According to a February blog post from Sony, the new VR system will connect to the PS5 via a single cord and will provide an easy-to-use, “high-fidelity visual experience.” However, along with the announcement of their new VR system, Sony also announced a new, innovative VR controller that will help push the new system into the future.

It’s easy to see right away why the new controllers (one for each hand) have already received a large amount of praise. A unique “orb” shape separates the new controllers from anything we have seen in the industry before and it’ll be interesting to see if this type of controller becomes a norm for VR gaming.

Equipped with a sleek, black design and several features that promise to enhance immersion and general gameplay. Speaking of features, while Sony Interactive Entertainment has built the new controller from the ground up, they have taken features from the PS5 DualSense controller and implemented them to their new product.

The new VR controller will feature adaptive triggers that will add palpable tension when pressing the L2 and R2 buttons and haptic feedback that helps further immerse a player in a gameworld. To enhance the VR experience, the new controller will be able to detect your fingers without any pressing in the areas where you place your thumb, index or middle fingers and the controller itself will be tracked through a tracking ring across the bottom of the controller.

According to Sony, the left controller will have an analog stick, triangle and square buttons, “grip” (used to pick up in-game objects among other things) and triggers buttons (L1 and L2) as well as a Create button which can be used to record, share and broadcast gameplay. On the other hand (literally,) the right controller will have the cross/x and circle buttons, “grip” and trigger (R1 and R2) buttons and the Options button.

For obvious reasons, the hype is already building for the next generation of virtual reality on the PlayStation and the new controller that was recently announced. Unfortunately, Sony has also stated that there is still a lot of development ahead and so the new VR system will not be launching in 2021. In that case, the best fans can hope for is an early 2022 release.
