Exploring the most anticipated PS5 game releases for 2021

The PS5 has gotten off to a great start in its short lifetime in terms of quality games and major releases. Games like Cyberpunk 2077, Assassins Creed Valhalla, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Demon’s Souls dominated the consoles lineup in late 2020. As for the new year, titles such as Hitman 3 and Yakuza: Like a Dragon have helped the next gen Sony console start 2021 off right.

Well, as we round into the second quarter of 2021, it’s hard to not get excited about what’s scheduled to be released in the coming months. Major titles from a variety of different genres are on the slate so it’s only natural that we dissect a few of the best.

Whether it’s an established series getting a new entry or an entirely new IP, excitement is on the horizon and it’s always good to prepare in advance. So, here a few games scheduled for release in the next few moments that are all available for preorder on antonline

MLB The Show 21

Release Date: April 20

America’s pastime. Ever since 2K sports stopped making MLB baseball games in 2013, developer San Diego Studio and publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment have had a monopoly on MLB video games.

For the most part, “The Show” series has been quite successful with their yearly release and the upcoming MLB The Show 21 should be no different. Last year’s edition was a bit of a disappointment in the eyes of many fans so the newest edition is working to rectify that

New features in MLB The Show 21 include the ability to take your Road to the Show player into other game modes, updated Franchise and March to October modes, a more streamlined Diamond Dynasty mode and the ability to play with all new baseball legends. And, as The series continues to move into next gen gaming, The Show is also attempting to take advantage of new features like the PS5 DualSense controller’s haptic feedback

Not to mention, for the first time ever, MLB The Show will be cross-platform compatible. This means that Xbox users will be able to experience the award-winning baseball series for the first time on their own consoles.

Returnal

Release Date: April 30

A brand new IP from developer Housemarque, Returnal is an upcoming psychological horror third-person shooter. Centered around a plot where the user is seemingly stuck in a sort of time loop on an alien planet, Returnal, which was first revealed back in June, has fans shaking with anticipation.

Featuring some absolutely gorgeous sci-fi visuals and engaging futuristic combat that places the player against some really unique alien monsters in a fight for survival and sanity. The games’ combat mechanics seem highly customizable with some truly unique weapons and other upgrades such as alien parasites that enhance the player’s combat abilities taking center stage.

Built on the Unreal 4 Engine, Returnal is an extremely promising single-player PS5 exclusive that is set to take advantage of the PS5’s 3D Spatial Audio and haptic feedback. The game was originally scheduled to be released in late March but on January 28, it was announced that the release date would be pushed back to its current date of April 30.

If you’re into any sort of sci-fi, horror, thriller or third-person shooter games, Housemarque’s latest project looks extremely promising. Returnal is a bit of a big leap for the developer in terms of scale but the studio has plenty of experience in the sci-fi genre. Prior to Returnal, Housemarque released side-scrolling sci-fi shooter Matterfall and twin-stick shooter Nex Machina—both of which released in 2017 to positive reviews.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart

Release Date: July 11

I grew up playing the Ratchet & Clank series and I’d be willing to bet that a lot of you can say the same about this beloved series. So, when a new Ratchet & Clank game was announced last June, I was obviously excited.

If by chance you have never heard of or experienced this iconic series, Ratchet & Clank is a platformer/third-person shooter that sees the player control of the headstrong titular character “Ratchet” as he and his robotic companion “Clank” save the universe from evil forces.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is the first console entry to the series since 2016’s Ratchet & Clank which was just a remake of the original 2002 game. Rift Apart will serve as a canonical continuation of 2013’s Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus.

While it has been said that this upcoming entry is a standalone entry that will appeal to first-time players of the series, there are many like me that have been anticipating this release for years. Obviously, developer Insomniac Games has been very busy with its smash hit Marvel’s Spider-Man (2018) and its recent sequel Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020) but if the game trailers are any indication, Ratchet & Clank fans are in for a great adventure.

Like many upcoming next-gen titles, Rift Apart will take advantage of the PS5’s hardware with various graphical and gameplay improvements. Additionally, there will be a playable female character in the game and this will be the first game in the series to feature real-time, near-instantaneous travel between different areas and game worlds.
